Lesson 23
Got = have got =
've got = got = have
in both the UK & the USA!

The exercises are based on interviews from both the short and long versions of this clip.

Short and long versions: The short version is for pre- intermediate and intermediate students.

The long version includes other structures for more advanced levels.

The short version of this clip is 3 minutes and a half, which is actually quite long as you work with it in the classroom, or when you study on your own.

The Long version is a nine-minute monster with some extraordinary people & most interesting regards on our verb structure "got".

This video lends itself to extended practice with the got structure and common vocabulary which becomes self evident in meaning on screen, since the interviewer always demands to see what somebody's got!

Teachers:
It has been proven that

good pronunciation =

listen many times before reading!

After doing the exercises, students come back and finally watch the version with subtitles.

Teachers, please also explain this to your beginner students:

What have you got in the bag? Short Version
( 3 min. 30 sec.)

With Subtitles (Cosed Captions)
( 3 min. 30 sec.):

What have you got in the bag? Long Version
(9 minutes - extended practice):

In both the short and long versions of this clip, you can often hear the interviewer ask the cameraman (me):
"Did you get it?", and "Got it?", while referring to my ability to take good pictures of the items which the interviewees have in their bags and shopping carts. It was a coup de grace so to speak.

This video should help solve arguments between grammarians, at least in so far as the way "got" and "have" are actually used by both Americans and the British.

The long version contains more British interviewees than the short version. I was surprised, at first, to hear the British say "I got a frozen chicken", but it is so common that it can not be counted as wrong! American and British people are in perfect agreement concerning the way they use this structure.
